Is Your Nonprofit Ready for the Future?

Cool trivia about the year we are in now: Did you know  that 2015 is the year that Marty McFly travelled to in the future to rescue his kids in the movie Back to the Future 2?

Amazingly, while we don't have flying cars or hoverboards, a lot of technology that seemed so far off back in 1989 is now part of our everyday.

Quoting my friends at Wikipedia "the film did accurately predict a number of technological and sociological changes, such as the rise of ubiquitous cameras (think the smartphone)…flat panel television sets mounted on walls, the ability to watch six channels at once, Internet video chat systems such as Skype (and Facetime), …head-mounted displays, and automated fueling systems. The film also correctly predicted a future where video games do not need hands (Microsoft Kinect) or, at the very least, do not need traditional controllers (Wii Remote)."

And let's not forget Voice Activated Technology (Siri) and thumbprint IDs (also iOS)!

We're living in the world from Back to The Future 2

Let me repeat - the world that seemed so far off when we first watched BTTF 2 in 1989 is almost exactly how we communicate and get messages everyday.

We live in the future and it is 100% driven by technology. Nowhere else does "the future" matter other than technology advancement. (I can't think of anything. Name some in the comments if you can.)

For nonprofits, it means YOU ARE NOT OPERATING AT ALL in the same world you were ten years ago. The iPhone isn't even eight years old. The iPad is barely five. Your donors are running 24/7 on both.

You now need to compete for donor's money and attention IN A WORLD THAT DIDN'T EVEN EXIST FIVE YEARS AGO!

Look, you cannot go back in time to 2010 and do everything over with your technology strategy so you'd have it perfect in 2015.

But you can catch up to the future today. You can start thinking about and using technology that applies to today's world and today's consumer...today.

If you aren't 100% certain that your donor management solution absolutely maximizes operating in our "Back to the Future, ipad, iphone" world - then you need to take action. Control your destiny in the space-time continuum.

But as you start 2015, don't a let another day go by that keeps making it harder for you operate in today's future. Or you're just going to fall farther back.
